La Mercè 2009
Barcelona, September 24th to September 27th
La Mercè is the annual Barcelona city celebration since 1871, that year, the cityhall developed for the first time an agenda with activities in order to celebrate the Virgen de la Merced (Mare de Déu de la Mercè in catalán) day, September 24th.

1902 was the first year when the gigantes (giants) coming from all Catalunya, took part of the festivities, the same happened with the first castells competition and with the sardana dance, becoming very popular those days.

The most recent introduced activities are the correfoc, the marathon, and the particularly famous "Piromusical" spectacle, fireworks combined with music and the amazing Fuentes Luminosas de Montjuïc all synchronized.
